Yaron Herman once aspired to be a professional basketball player, but a teenage injury put an end to that dream. In hindsight, it was a stroke of luck for the music world, as the Israeli-born, France-based musician instead became a brilliant jazz pianist—and in just a few years.
Herman’s most recent solo album, rich in atmosphere, was created entirely spontaneously in the studio. At the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, he presents the repertoire from his new quartet album. The pieces, he says, are more structured yet more energetic than anything he has done before. Joining him is saxophonist Maria Grand, who is always drawn to musical surprises—an approach that perfectly aligns with Herman’s philosophy: “You go to a concert to come out a little changed.”
