What a career! Ever since Igor Levit gave his début performance in 2011, he has returned every year to the Festival – on occasion, even twice in the same year. His recitals are always true highlights. In 2017, for instance, he performed three of the greatest variation cycles in the course of two evenings: Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, and Rzewski’s The People United. Then, in 2020, he agreed to play the last three Beethoven sonatas two times in a row to help us honor most ticket reservations in spite of reduced auditorium capacity during the pandemic. Igor Levit is widely admired as one of the major pianists of his generation, well-known even outside of the circles of classical music connoisseurs. Released in 2019, his complete recording of the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas remained at the top of classical music charts for months. Now Levit returns to the Festival for the 15th time. On this occasion he will perform with Liszt’s brilliant piano arrangement of Beethoven’s “Eroica”, much more than a mere piano reduction!
