The exact origin of the term “Tastenlöwe” in the world of music is a matter of debate among scholars. It is used whenever a pianist takes on a predominantly virtuosic work and explores it to the limits of playability. In this regard, the term would apply quite rightly to Evgeny Kissin, notably to the young Kissin, who, with his fiery mane, externally resembled a powerful and intimidating creature, but also had something wild and majestic in his playing. When you listen closely (or have had the rare opportunity to speak with Kissin), a completely different association emerges.

Behind the powerful agency, the unconditional and unveiled, there is something of Rilke’s Panther, prowling through its cage, lonely and wounded, absorbing the foreignness of the world. It is this ambivalence that makes Kissin’s interpretations, especially of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninov, and Prokofiev, an event.
