Born in Belgrade, Anika Vavić is a passionate discoverer of new piano music: for a long time she has been featuring works by contemporary composers such as Rodion Shchedrin, Galina Ustvolskaya and Giya Kancheli in her programmes. Yet Vienna Classicism also plays an outstanding role in her musical upbringing: since the age of 16 she has been living in the Austrian capital, where she received important counsel from piano legends such as Elisabeth Leonskaja and Lazar Berman. She recently performed the world première of Johannes Maria Staud’s „Peras“ at the Ruhr Piano Festival. Now she returns with a highly original programme, featuring rarely performed works by Ludwig van Beethoven (the birth anniversary of whom we celebrate this year), combined with brief pieces by Scriabin, Prokofiev, Chopin, and Shih, a Taiwanese composer who resides in Vienna.
