Malte Arkona

Malte Arkona

“He is (…) cheeky, charismatic, and passionate about classical music,” writes the Süddeutsche Zeitung about Malte Arkona.

The three-time Echo Klassik award winner is now one of the most sought-after music communicators in the German-speaking world. He is widely known as an actor, voice actor, and TV host. As the presenter of the popular shows Tigerenten Club and Die beste Klasse Deutschlands, he became beloved by audiences both young and old. He has demonstrated his exceptional vocal versatility in the audio drama adaptation of the ARD series Babylon Berlin and in the German dubbing of the series Modern Family (as Professor Arvin Fennerman).

Regular live streams for SWR (SWR Symphony Orchestra) and NDR (NDR Radiophilharmonie), as well as from the Philharmonie Luxembourg (Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg), along with hosting engagements on Magenta TV (Rheingau Music Festival) and Medici TV (final of The Mahler Competition by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra), seamlessly combine his 20 years of television experience with the world of classical music.

Whether at film music galas (e.g., with the Dresden Philharmonic), open-air concerts with up to 35,000 spectators (e.g., for the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig), or in chamber music settings with the Boulanger Trio at the Elbphilharmonie—Arkona has a talent for striking the right chord to connect the audience with the music.

Malte Arkona has also hosted events for the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Symphoniker, WDR Funkhausorchester, Württembergisches Kammerorchester, and Concerto Köln. In these settings, he frequently interacts with leading figures in the classical music scene, who not only share fascinating insights into their music but also reveal personal anecdotes. Pianist Lang Lang once told Malte what he does when he lacks motivation to practice, Maestro Lorin Maazel spoke about his yoga sessions at the airport, Andris Nelsons raved about his martial arts training, and the Labèque sisters let Malte take a peek at their colorfully annotated sheet music.

In the 2024/2025 season, Malte Arkona will continue his successful collaborations with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Munich Philharmonic, the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Symphoniker Hamburg, and the GKO Ingolstadt. Further guest performances will take him back to the Kölner Philharmonie, the Philharmonie Essen, the Kempten Classix Festival, and the Robert-Schumann-Saal in Düsseldorf. Together with the Dresden Philharmonic, he has created a new concert series, Best of Classics, which will premiere this season. In the summer of 2025, Arkona will once again host the renowned open-air concert Klassik Airleben by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, conducted by Andris Nelsons.

In his diverse projects, Malte Arkona collaborates with the “who’s who” of the classical music world, including Andris Nelsons, Igor Levit, Simone Young, Cristian Măcelaru, Barbara Hannigan, Christian Tetzlaff, Daniel Hope, Joana Mallwitz, Patrick Hahn, Edgar Moreau, Claire Huangci, Tanja Tetzlaff, and Andrew Manze.

In 2020, Malte began an exclusive partnership with the Berlin Classics label (Edel Kultur). For adult listeners, he recorded a unique version of Carnival of the Animals. In his own audio drama series, Malte & Mezzo, he takes on the role of a classical music explorer, embarking on musical adventures with his cheeky animal companion Mezzo. He presents well-known works and composers in humorous and engaging original narratives. Some of the released titles include Spooky Pictures at an Exhibition, On Tour with Mozart, A Party with Beethoven, and No Troubles with The Magic Flute. These audio dramas are not just for children—they are entertaining and worth listening to for all ages. This season, Malte & Mezzo will also return to the stage with live performances. The adventure Tracking Beethoven!, from the Orchester-Detektive series with the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, was released in 2020 in cooperation with NDR on Sony Classical.

Beyond developing new concert formats for classical music, Malte made his directorial debut in 2021, working on a music video for the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra Dresden as well as several clips for the Dresden Philharmonic. Last season, this work was expanded into an accompanying project for international concert tours of the Dresden Philharmonic. His podcast, MPhil mit Malte, created in collaboration with the Munich Philharmonic, also launched successfully in 2021.

Since 2022, Malte Arkona has held a teaching position in Presentation for Musicians at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin.
