Looking at his repertoire, it seems that there are no technical or musical boundaries for Thibaut Surugue. He is equally at home in the famous masterpieces of Baroque, Classical, and Romantic literature, as well as in the classics of Modernism. Furthermore, he enjoys featuring hidden gems from the overlooked and forgotten corners of music history in his programs. It is no surprise that a discovery-loving person like the Frenchman, born in 1986, is drawn to the music of the present day.

As a former scholar of the Ensemble Modern Academy, Surugue has worked not only with the renowned Frankfurt-based ensemble but also with many other important contemporary music ensembles, as well as with prominent composers such as Heinz Holliger, Brigitta Muntendorf, and Rebecca Saunders. He is a regular performer at notable festivals, including ACHT BRÜCKEN, NOW, and the Paris Festival d’Automne. Additionally, he is a permanent pianist with the Cologne-based ensemble hand werk, where he has made his home for many years. The winner of numerous piano competitions, Surugue was drawn to the Rhineland metropolis for his piano training, where contemporary music has always played a central role. In Pierre-Laurent Aimard’s class at the Cologne University of Music and Dance, he deepened his understanding in this field – and immersed himself in the fascinating piano works of Olivier Messiaen. Having become an intimate connoisseur and captivating interpreter of this music, Thibaut Surugue is a beloved guest at Pierre-Laurent Aimard’s Messiaen-focused performances.
