When a virtuoso like Mahan Esfahani plays Domenico Scarlatti’s piano sonatas on the harpsichord, one can almost see his fingers flying through the air, sometimes gliding elegantly in a stately dance over the keys. According to the official count, there are 555 of these pieces—an almost mystical number—overflowing with detail and variety, with no two alike: a perfect match for Esfahani, who performs with verve and dedication. His early fascination with the harpsichord is closely linked to Scarlatti’s music.
