4:15–6:00 PM: Guided tours through the museum
6:00 PM: Recital

No dazzling figure of his time could have rivaled the eccentricity of Erik Satie. As the “inventor” and medium of an entirely new kind of music, he profoundly influenced not only composers and writers but also the painters of his Parisian circle—a historical fact that can hardly be conveyed more vividly than in a museum setting. It is therefore a brilliant idea to relocate Tamar Halperin’s journey through Satie’s fascinating piano works to the Museum Folkwang in Essen.

The Israeli pianist has long been fascinated by the composer, whose calligraphic musical notations extend into the realm of visual art. Not only on the piano but also on instruments such as the harpsichord, Hammond organ, or glockenspiel—and even through the use of electronics—Halperin uses her musical imagination to connect iconic pieces like the three *Gymnopédies* and the even more enigmatic *Gnossiennes* with the pulse of our time. On this Satie Day, she will perform selections from both cycles, combined with additional (sometimes pear-shaped) pieces by Satie and his most attentive “students,” including Claude Debussy, John Cage, and Chick Corea.

In an introductory lecture, musicologist and France expert Tobias Bleek will guide the audience through the unique sound and thought world of Erik Satie, shedding light on his interdisciplinary projects and his influence on painting and film. On this occasion, we will experience Satie not only as a pioneer of film music but also as an on-screen performer in René Clair’s groundbreaking short film *Entr’acte* (1924). The film’s famous opening sequence shows the composer in his signature attire—stiff hat, umbrella, and high-collared coat—playfully hopping alongside painter Francis Picabia toward a cannon, which they proceed to load and fire at the movie audience.

Following thematic guided tours, visitors will explore artworks from the Museum Folkwang’s collection and archives that resonate with Satie’s world and ideas. Not only the Cubists but also the Dadaists and Surrealists frequently referenced the work of Montmartre’s most famous glasses-wearer—whom Tamar Halperin, in a new light, will bring back to life through his music in her post-tour concert.
