It is not often that a top musician like Gidon Kremer is left speechless—but in the case of Georgijs Osokins, it must have been the case. As one of the first, he appointed the young pianist from Latvia as a permanent guest artist of his Kremerata Baltica and made him his duo partner, with whom he regularly tours the major music capitals. By now, Georgijs Osokins has also conquered concert halls around the world as a soloist of extraordinary range—with great individuality and a charismatic personality, far from any showmanship.

The visitors of the Warsaw Chopin Competition had already noticed that they were witnessing a special musician when Osokin made a lasting impression there in 2015. Even in the early rounds, the then 19-year-old impressed with his fresh perspective on the works of the Polish national composer. Razor-sharp rhythm, masterfully crafted sound architecture, and a hint of demonic drive: even before the final, he was engaged for a series of important debuts. At the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, he made his debut in 2019, performing works by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and his fellow countryman Arvo Pärt. A fitting and highly exciting addition to this year’s program are the works of the Russian mystic Alexander Scriabin and the equally vibrant tone painting that Franz Liszt creates in his “Fantasia quasi Sonata – Après une lecture du Dante”.
