Johannes Brahms: Intermezzo in Es-Dur op. 117/1

Today, Igor Levit is considered one of the “most important artists of his generation” (New York Times).

When it comes to his repertoire, he says he is sometimes gripped by delusions of grandeur. This is also the case with the transcriptions of great symphonies by Beethoven and Mahler, which Levit interprets more complexly than almost anyone else. “Playing the orchestra on the piano has never been given to anyone,” wrote Franz Liszt, “yet one must always strive for the ideal.” At his concert in the Konzerthaus Dortmund, we will be able to experience just how brilliantly Levit realizes this when he plays not only Liszt’s transcription of Beethoven’s “Eroica”, but also a piano version of the famous Adagio from Gustav Mahler’s 10th Symphony. The two works will frame Hindemith’s Suite “1922”, with which Levit already wowed the audience at the 2005 Artur Rubinstein Competition, where he won the silver medal at the age of 18.

Igor Levit

With an alert and critical mind, Igor Levit places his art in the context of social events and understands it as inseparably linked to them. The New York Times describes Igor Levit as one of the “most important artists of his generation”, the New Yorker as a pianist “like no other”.
