The protean Canadian artist Chilly Gonzales has performed three times previously at the Ruhr Piano Festival. Although you can never quite know what to expect in his shows, each of his concerts has propelled the thrilled Festival audiences out of their seats. This multifaceted artist’s best recipe for success seems to thrive on unpredictability and the permanent element of surprise. Gonzales loves to don a multitude of disguises at once: he is a pianist, an entertainer, a singer, a composer, a songwriter, a rapper, and a speaker who explains musical connections. Yet in spite of all the ebullient humor he injects into his irresistibly entertaining concerts, Gonzales is everything else but a keyboard clown – as is proven by his sparse, gorgeous solo piano miniatures, some of which he will certainly also perform in the course of this evening.
